Seize and Impound
The retention of dogs and cats at Township facilities is intended to be temporary and shall, wherever possible, adhere to the retention periods outlined in the applicable By-law.
Discretionary measures may be applied on a case-by-case basis to ensure the health and safety of both people and animals involved.
If a dog or cat doesn’t have a license and is found running loose, an Animal Control Officer or By-Law Officer can pick it up and take it to the animal shelter.
The animal will stay at the shelter for at least 3 days.
During that time, the officers will try to contact the owner and let them know how to get their pet back.
If the owner does not claim the animal within 3 days, the Municipality can either:
- Rehome the animal to a responsible owner, or
- Humanely euthanize the animal if necessary
Any new owner must register and license the animal according to the by-law before taking it home.
Collection of Impounded Animal
During the impound period, the Owner of the Dog or Cat shall be entitled to collect the animal upon:
- Payment of the impound fees and the board fees
- Payment of any veterinarian fees incurred of the well-being of the Dog or Cat
- Registering the Dog or Cat with the Township of Bonfield
